Half-elves are extremely rare as the vast majority of the elven people have retreated to what remains of their homeland to recover from the damage wrought to their homeland and people by the breaking of the world. There is however the odd black sheep that has gone out exploring the world or the rare family or village that refused to close themselves off from the world and instead has made their place with other races or their own secluded locale. As a consequence half-elves are usually the result of a forbidden relationship, violence, a heated life-affirming moment, or a monetary transaction and a failed contraceptive.
Half-elves tend to attract attention both positive and negative as people tend to romanticize elves or distrust them and their isolationist attitudes. Despite this half-elves can and do achieve as much or more than anyone in lands outside the elven kindgom. In kingdom is a different story as the elves have only one port city that is open to non-elves and elven law regards half-elves as technically being non-elven or not elven enough.
